5 Simple Steps to Stylish and Organized Bathroom Shelves

Your bathroom shelves might not be something you think about often, but they deserve some attention. All those little items you use every day shouldn’t be cluttered in a drawer or hidden away in a dark cabinet. They should be neatly organized on display, adding to your bathroom’s style.

So, how do you keep your bathroom essentials organized and looking nice? That’s where perfectly styled bathroom shelves come in. It might sound tricky, but we asked expert stylist Kathleen Varner from Birmingham, Alabama, for tips on how to decorate bathroom shelves. She shares her fail-proof advice for arranging bathroom shelves to be both practical and pleasing to the eye.

Choose Adjustable Shelves for Small Bathrooms

When it comes to bigger bathrooms, built-in shelves are preferred, but having the flexibility to adjust shelf height and position is crucial in smaller areas. “Brackets or floating shelves work well for small spaces and can be adapted as needs change,” it is explained. There are various types of bathroom shelves available, including glass options, standalone units, tall towers, and small accent shelves. Determining your storage requirements, space size, and style preferences will help you choose the most suitable shelf.

Make It Practical

When setting up bathroom shelves, they should serve two main purposes. “I like to add some special touches like small picture frames or a few pieces of artwork, but it’s also important that the shelves are useful for everyday items,” says the expert. To achieve this, consider what items you use most often. Brushes, makeup, and a spot for jewelry should be easily accessible on your bathroom shelves. You can also transfer items like cotton swabs, cotton balls, and bath salts from their original containers to pretty glass jars, which not only makes them look nicer but also makes them easy to grab when you need them.

Use Boxes and Bins to Stay Organized

One problem with open shelves, whether they’re in the kitchen, laundry room, or bathroom, is that you can see clutter easily. That’s why experts recommend using boxes, bins, and baskets to keep small items organized. “Try not to have too many different patterns, but stick to similar colors for your containers, with a mix of solid and clear ones,” they suggest. They also advise grouping similar items together, like keeping makeup brushes in one spot and cotton swabs in another. This not only keeps things neat but also makes it easier to find what you need. It’s a win-win situation.

Add Your Own Style

Decorating bathroom shelves is about making them look special. Instead of using regular plastic containers, try using antiques or vintage items to give your shelves a stylish touch. “Use unexpected things like a teacup saucer from your favorite china set to hold small earrings, or small cups for organizing makeup,” suggests the expert. They also recommend using vintage wine glasses for storing makeup brushes or as unique vases. The more personal and unique the details on your bathroom shelves, the better. “It’s a great place to display things that are special to you,” they say. “For example, I bought a little pink bunny for my daughter’s first birthday, and I’m keeping it on her bathroom shelf until she’s old enough to not break it!”

Add Fresh Flowers

When it comes to making a space look complete, details are important. Whether you’re sprucing up a dull corner at home or styling a photo shoot, flowers can make a big difference. “Just a few stems are enough,” suggests the expert. They always have small vases handy for little flower arrangements. “My daughter enjoys picking flowers lately, and the bathroom shelf is a perfect place for them.” And don’t forget a candle—adding one can make your bathroom feel like a spa.
